Founded in 1820 by Rev. Dr. William Carey, the Agri Horticultural Society of India stands as the country's oldest institution dedicated to agriculture and horticulture. Spanning 24 acres at 1 Alipore Road, Kolkata, this historic society has played a pivotal role in shaping India's agricultural landscape. As it celebrates its Bicentenary, Arterra is honored to spearhead its restoration, transforming it into a contemporary, aesthetically refined, and ecologically sustainable sanctuary for the community.
Our design approach harmonizes the Society’s Victorian architectural heritage with modern sensibilities. The restoration features a sustainable Yoga Pavilion, offering an immersive, chakra-aligning experience with nature. A permeable entrance seamlessly integrates with the lush gardens, while a tranquil walking trail, enhanced by soft lighting and ambient music, invites visitors to unwind. Each element was meticulously curated to preserve the institution’s rich history while breathing new life into its surroundings.
The revitalized landscape merges effortlessly with the Society’s carefully maintained gardens and expansive nurseries, ensuring a cohesive, visually striking environment. As the "lungs of Alipore," the Society remains a cherished haven for long-time patrons and a captivating retreat for new visitors.
Ongoing and future enhancements—including a café, flower shop, and galleria—will further enrich the space, establishing it as an oasis amidst Kolkata’s urban sprawl. Arterra is deeply committed to preserving and elevating this 200-year- old institution, ensuring it remains a beacon of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and environmental stewardship for generations to come.
